Scones not so humble.

Scones to rhyme with cones or scones to rhyme with gone. Whatever you may call them I love them. To some they are a bread while others they are a plain small cake. To me they are a category all of their own.

I find it very soothing to make a scone and by the time the bowls are washed, put back in the cupboard and the kettle is boiled those scones are ready for tasting.

Now I am going to be very pernickety. I am not interested in those vast, tall scones the size of a side plate. Those scones are so large because of the use of whipped cream and because certain establishments know they can charge a fortune for them. I am not interested either in those scones of a uniform size which are so doughy that unless eaten straight from the oven they are actually tasteless. No amount of reheating in a microwave are going to revive those thick dense excuses for a scone.

I love a scone which as soon as you see it you just know that it has been made fresh and wiht love. It does not have to be round, square or uniform. the simple combination of flour, butter, sugar milk and that important pinch of salt meld together to make a heart warming morsel is all it takes.

A plain scone to which I can add some jam or curd with a warming cuppa is a joy to behold and even better to eat. Lately savoury scones have been tempting me. chees and herb scones; simple herb scones, walnut and honey which is both sweet and savoury. Have you tried a scone with some cooked onions, thyme and pepper…mmmm just delicious.

The taste options are endless. So I am off to see what flavour I can add to today’s scone.
