Summer Solstice

Another few days until the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice. A time of new beginnings. June the 21st when the day will begin with sunrise at 3.40am GMT.

There are always the people who see the Summer Solstice as the ending of the long days but traditionally it was seen as a time of beginnings, of celebration and looking forward.

flowers are gathered to form a wreath.

Is it just that I am getting older that the year seems to be flowing by. Perhaps it was that there were happy events already this year. Perhaps the weeks are no longer marked by job deadlines. Now in retirement the days are marked more by nature than the clock.

But back to the the longest day of the year and food associated with it. The summer vegetables of sweet young carrots, new potatoes and every kind of lettuce are consumed on the day. Light is celebrated through the food. Simple steamed vegetables with a light sauce to celebrate the light.

Although it may not be possible to light the traditional bonfires which would have been lit in the past. The symbol and ritual of lighting a white or cream candle can stillbe held out side. Light is seen as a sign of hope and new beginings.

Whatever you may do on the day of the Summer Solstice enjoy.
